overdrive basicly uses all 4 gears to accelerate instead of 3. Basicly without it on it will use 3 gears to get up to your desired speed and it will coast in 4th to save petrol and then change down when you want to accelerate some more.

But with it on it will stay in whateva gear is closest to what speed you are doing. Mainly you only need it for going up big long hills that require you to say in 1st or second the whole way up the hill instead of changing when you put your foot down on the accelerator.

Sorry if what i have said is abit hard to follow. In short....Get a manual. :)

What ashman?  What you just said doesn't make sense to me...

4th in U12 auto boxes has a lock-up torque convertor that kicks in at 70kmph (as I remember from my corsair) in the FWD's and my car's auto locks up at 80kmph.

If overdrive is OFF the car will not go any higher than 3rd gear.  IE: With it off, you will be revving at 3500rpm or something stupid at 100kmph.  With it on, it will drop into 4th and over 70kmph the torque convertor will lock up.

pretty much, overdrive lower's the gear your currently at by 1... when your at a stand still with overdrive off, you will draw out your first gear longer... its usefull if someone suddently brakes and you need to lower a gear, simply push the button and it knocks down (as if you were gear braking in a manual)... also use it if you are towing something and need more power...

note: O/D should always be on, unless you switch it off in which case an 'O/D off' light will light up on your dashboard

My dash says O/D Off ... that is what lights up.  I'm sure the FWD's are the same.  So its pretty bloody obvious.

Also if you wondering....the key to start your car goes into the little key slot to the right of the steering wheel.

no you full, that makes no cents...
the little slot is a coin slot, it accepts all but 5cent coins, the key that came with your cars is just to unlock the doors/boot/glovebox.

Out of curiosity, what is everyones average cents per kilometres?

I usually have to put $2 in the slot to get from my place to town, my car is a ripoff, youd think you'd get free fuel for the $2 but you dont!!!!

i cruise at 110 down to phillisland in 5th gear at 2.5 thou rpm which i think is pritty good.
if your travelling at 100 at 3.5 thou rpm thats not good ratio.
Unless auto's are shit!!!

so if the light is on the over drive is off.

yes.

Pintara Auto Drive Ratios

1st - 2.785
2nd - 1.545
3rd - 1.000
4th - 0.694 <-- O/D

With overdrive OFF the light (as said) will come on to annoy you, and the box will not go past 3rd gear.

It's called overdrive as the gear ratio for 4th gear is below 1. All of the others are above 1. These low gears are what amplify torque/power that gets to the wheels (Launching in high gears = sluggy or doesn't work at all) - however the engine will rev out quickly at lower speed, hence the need to change gears. Any overdrive gear (4th in our autos and 5th in our manuals) will have crap acceleration but allow the engine to tick over at low rpm whilst at high speed - if you were still in say 2nd or 3rd you'd be redlining the thing.

Well, thats common sense really. Having overdrive on will allow the car to gear into 4th when cruising at speed, for better fuel economy, and presumably less engine thrashing and noise. if it's a problem, say you encounter a really steep hill or towing, you can turn OD off to force the box to not exceed 3rd gear. Much like putting it in 2 makes it not exceed 2nd gear, or putting it in 1 makes it not exceed 1st gear.

Go for a drive, get up to 100km/h somewhere, and switch between OD on and off if you want to experience it for yourself. I havn't done more than 2 hours driving total ever in an auto and I know all of this, it is not complex.

Short answer: OD on = 4 useable gears. OD off = 3 useable gears.

Both my dad and the guy who now runs his business (both auto transmission mechanics with decades experience) recommend not using O/D for city driving. Constantly changing to and from 4th gear wears the clutches out really fast. Yes, autos have clutches.

yeah i knocked my little O/D switch when vacumning my car last week and i couoldnt understand why it was reving at 2100rpm at 60km/h when it normally revas at around 1400-1500 rpm.

Then after a couple of days i realised the little O/D wtitch was pushed in, opps.

but after reading this thread i realised i didnt see any O/D switch light on my dash  ???

I disagree with that statement,i am an A.S.E. certified transmission tech with over twenty years experience in this field,in forth(OD) the band thats holds in second also holds in forth along with the high(3rd clutches) I never shut off my overdrive and it works quite well with well over 130 thousand miles since I overhauled this transaxle @ 68 thousand miles.
I got this car for 200 dollars from a customer at the shop where I work and the customer did not want to repair his 90 Stanza Xe which i feel is the best car I have owned since I started driving.

I agree with the A.S.E guy.

I have had my '90 Auto Corsair for 11  years now.  It is the original gearbox/clutch etc and the norm for me is to have the overdrive on.....no problem.  vehicle currently has 252, 000 k's on the odo..

DON'T dig up threads that are over 2 years old without considerable contribution to the point in the thread.
