Problem:

Does anyone know the best way to get at the bushes directly under the stick?

From under the car, it's all covered up, with the exhaust in the way.  From inside the cabin, I've taken the center console off, but I don't know how to go any further.

I have the full service manual, but the diagram on MT-7 isn't entirely helpful about what to remove in order to expose the components it describes.

I'm guessing I get at it from underneath somehow???

Solution:

Jack the car up and stick some stands under it.

Slide under on your back with a 10mm socket and undo the 4 bolts on the heatshield.

Then get a 10mm spanner and undo the bolt on top of the exhaust at the rear of the heatshield. It helps of your car is cold when you do this.

Pull the heatshield from one side while you push it from the other to slide it over the pipe and out. You will bend it a bit, but it goes straight back on with little force.

I think its a 12mm for the bolt in the bottom of the lever.

Follow up:

Well, that was fairly quick and easy.  I didn't bother taking the catalytic converter off.  There was plenty of room.

Taking the heat shield off, and putting it back on again didn't take much time.

Fraz, your write-up was spot-on (including the spanner gauges).

The catalytic converter and heat shield:

Take away the screws, rip out the shield:

BTW, wear eye protection.  There is crap on the heat shield that goes everywhere.  Expect falling bitumen rocks too.

That lower pic shows the spring missing. Did you re-fit it?
Its not important, just holds the stick near the centre when its in neutral.

That spring goes on those two tabs. Its not important if it doesnt bother you, the best place to get one would be at the wreckers, i dont know if you could find one with the right tension in a shop.

The return spring only costs $2.85 new from nissan.
