Hi all, hoping someone may be able to help where no-one else is able! 1991 Ford Corsair GL 2.0i that has been a dream for past 7 yrs currently with 194,000 on clock. Have replaced manifold & put on extractors, re-connd starter & alternator, new fuel pump, new Dizzy cap & looms. Since April 2009 (when alt done) car plays up intermittantly but regularly to bewilderment of Ford mechs & my mech. Would run fine for 30 mins, then start coughing/surging like. Replaced MAF 3 mths ago, replaced again under warrranty 2 weeks ago. Will now stall at lights, then run beautifully for 30-50 mins before either coughing or stalling. Beyond myself with frustration as I get stuck with 2 young kids and now do not wish to leave home to even go to library! My mech checked fuel pump again Boxing Day and remarked how clean & good it was, no water in petrol and tapped fuel tank as I read on other posts. We thinking that after 18 years that perhaps the computer has finally died as we have done everything else! The ECM light comes on, stays on, then goes off sporadically, then comes back. Ford says that it screams codes from MAF. Could computer being stuffed and giving wrong info to MAF?? Please help as I am fed up after 9 mths, can't afford another car, get stuck in heat with 2 little kids, xmas hol plans screwed, and have fixed everything else! Thankx in advance, Gnomes.

Gnomes, someone on here will surely have a CA20E computer they can give to you, most likely for free. Plug it in and try it, see what happens! I don't unfortunately

Has your mechanic checked the wiring for the MAF?
They go hard and fragile over the years from heat, could be a dry joint since the ECM light throws a MAF code.

Thankx guys for your replies thus far! Where do I look for a spare puter, and what is the going price so I don't get diddled? Shall pass on other suggestions to mechanic the next time he's free, which I hope is sooner rather than later! As for the wiring.. I assume you're telling me that the wiring wouldn't be automatically replaced when they changed over MAF sensor?? Considering that everything that has been replaced has had wiring that has astounded the mechanics that it was still working when I took her in - wiring could be a prob.

Have you fixed it yet? if no,
has the mechanics checked the ecm(computer) for codes (they REALLY should have) info on how is on this site. that may show the prob.---> it should be throwing codes if the light is coming on that much!
However my x's corsair had a similar issue (but only very intermittently - mechanics couldn't find the issue over more than a year) I fixed it - the MAIN issue was corrosion on the connector/pins of the hall sensor (the black box on the side of the distributor)
However the ecm only threw the correct code(11) after I changed it with a spare I had (so there must of been a minor issue with the ecm as well)
But again I'd be looking at your distributor hall sensor as yoour main culprit!!

i had similar problems once upon a time, but it was a ka24e pintara, not a ca20e. it was the power transistor, also a little black box, that is attached to the underside of the coil pack in the ka24e. could be another thing to look at. also, this may help your mechanic trouble shoot the issue: http://www.antrx.com/smf/index.php/topic,7177.0.html in that link is the full pdf version of the nissan service manual. there are very good trouble shooting procedures in there which are specific to the pintara (as it is a pintara book) its a very large document though, so you wont be wanting to print it. you will need adobe acrobat or a similar pdf viewing program to view it on your pc.

Hi Guys - thankx for all the advice. Have replaced computer with one I purchased from a member here, and still playing up - I guess not as bad but still annoyingly enough. I have been thinking that the distributor is the main area of problem so glad to hear others think the same. Had the distributor connecting black box thingy replaced Xmas Eve - died on me Boxing Day. Replacement computer put in end Jan 2010 and still no fix. Now it's save the $$$ time as my local Ford dealer has new management who no longer allow car fix then pay off account - I need the bucks up front, so for now it's drive and grumble whilst praying it doesn't break down again.

When you say it coughs and surges, what do you mean? under acceleration? at idle>? Sitting at the lights? I had a car in the shop this week doing the same thing... was simply a blocked fuel filter...
